My Stevenson Experience

MY STEVENSON EXPERIENCE

To begin with my motivation for doing the course was the opportunities which it offers. During my research I found that there is no other course which offers the support that the access course does. My expectations were that I would be the youngest person in the class. However I found when I arrived for the first class that there were many people just like me, around the same age and with similar histories of leaving school not knowing what they wanted to do as a career. I expected to perhaps struggle with some aspects of the course, however those aspects turned out to be completely different than I thought they would be. I don’t find that I have trouble with the workload or the level, however I did find the class difficult when I couldn’t race ahead or when I found others were not working as much I was. So I learned to have even more patience with people around me and to give some help and advice at times too, so that has turned into a bit of a positive too.

Positive experiences

History

I’ve learned so much from history class about Britain and Europe. Also I have learned a substantial amount from Evan about politics and I now feel I can understand current affairs and politics much better than before. History does repeat itself, it is important to learn about the political and social movements that shape our experiences now and I hope to continue to learn about history in the future.

Literature

In Literature class I have learned to express myself in a way I had never attempted to before. The subject provokes deep analysis of the use of the English language and I’ve found myself gaining better skills of examination and analysis when reading anything from a newspaper to a poem. I have developed an appreciation of poetry and prose which has really enriched my love of writing.

Communications

In this class I corrected bad habits I had developed in grammar and punctuation. This had quite often made me feel less educated or intelligent. I began to feel more fluent in all of my forms of expression. Alongside Literature lessons communication helped me to evaluate the intended message of communication, how people communicate through unspoken methods and how the media are subtle in their techniques.

Maths

Maths used to terrify me because I felt that I didn’t have the ability to do well in the subject. This made me feel like I was less intelligent than I should be and made me feel uncomfortable. However once I began to study maths, I felt my power of concentration was improving greatly. I realised I had the potential to easily complete the work of the class and it was just a case of becoming better at problem solving. This encouraged me to see that I could become good at a subject through hard work and persistence. It made me feel quite proud that I could overcome my dislike of Maths and eventually begin to enjoy it.

Spanish

Learning a new language has also shown me that with hard work the tasks I can complete increase the more I harness my brain power. My intelligence has grown as I’ve begun to open my mind to the expression of a foreign language. I seem to have passed the barrier I felt to the language when I first began learning. Not understanding can be a great frustration to me and cause me to give up, however I have never felt this way about any of the classes of the course, especially not the Spanish class despite the daily commitment of homework. Shortly after starting to work everyday on Spanish I found that I was really enjoying it and I had to reign in my time spent on it so I was able to go to bed or dinner etc. Although I have not applied to study Spanish as a degree, I am committed to learning the language for the rest of my life. My learning has also encompassed a wider understanding and appreciation of Hispanic history and the people of all Spanish speaking countries.

Investigating Europe

Joe’s class gave me my first real taste of independent study. With so little class time I was able to schedule time for my own goals for the project. This required some honesty with myself as to what I was going to do to enable me to finish my project well and in plenty of time. Having free reign of what I was studying was something I relished. I really enjoyed searching out clues and contacts to find the most information I could. Eventually this meant I was knowledgeable in the subject enough to form my own conclusions and opinions, which really gave me confidence in my work.

Study and I.T Skills

Study and I.T Skills has helped to keep track of my progress throughout the course. This has been an important because it helped me to realise if there were areas I needed to work on more, or tasks I was performing well on which gave me confidence and also made me strive to do better. When involved in anything absorbing it can be easy to lose myself in what I’m doing. Study Skills helped me to reflect, to learn my own habits and create strong goals I could stick to and achieve if I simply stuck to my own goals.

To conclude I feel my year of study on the Access course has helped me become ready to study at university. I am very happy with my decision to go to university and I feel that the variation of the course helped me to decide which subject I was best suited to study. It has been a valuable experience, which has boosted my confidence, given me new/revamped skills and given me a new, hopeful and fresh outlook on my future.

Weekly post

Here is my weekly post to show what I got up to this week to complete the rest of the course.

SPANISH
This week I have been working on memorising my essay that I will write in class at the end of May. I feel that this is going quite well. I have a few mistakes with pronouns and little things I just have to be careful to watch out for.

As for the talk..Alicia has advised me to stick to my talk that I presented to her before but just to make it a little more complicated and eloquent. She quite liked the expressions I used so I have already memorised my talk, I just have to revise all the topics she may ask her 3 questions on.

Revising the topics is going well. I'm making sure that I write sentences using everything I want to learn to use the words and get it to stick firmly in my mind. I'm reading a book of short stories in Spanish which I have with me all the time and I understand better everyday.

LITERATURE
Still to do in Lits I have to remediate my comparison essay which has already been done. Maeleine gave me pretty clear advice on what it needed and so it was a quick and easy job.

Next I have my essay plan for the structure of the Personal study essay to be done in class. I've chosen Out of Africa. I have a good idea now of the techniques used by the writer I'm going to focus on and the motifs also. I have a main theme that will be the main topic of the essay.

HISTORY
I have completed the Hitler essay for Evan's history class. I found the details quite interesting and will perhaps focus on the subject for my exam which will be two fridays from now.

Also I'm making sure I prepare for the exam by revising all history topics so I have a good choice of what I want to write about when it comes to the essay.

Meanwhile I'm beginning to work on the personal essay for history of the topic: the partition of India and the effects on the area of Kashmir today.
I have gotten many books from the library and from Blackwells too so I have already got quite a well rounded idea of my viewpoint and the arguments I want to present.
Evan was right when he said that if you read widely your topic and your essay question will come to you. If was hard not to jump right in and to wait while I did a few weeks of reading. But now I've learned the benefit of being prepared well in advance and having a lot of knowledge in your head before you begin.

COMMS
I am very nearly finished my preparation for my talks. I want to deliver them together which would be nice because the topics are ery closely linked and I think one would be more interesting after the other for others. I've really enjoyed the subject of Arabic culture, it's something I've always been interested in and I'm happy to present this now because I feel quite passionate about it!

So in general I have to just continue getting through the things which are on the list. In the next couple of weeks I will be sitting a few exams which will mean that many things are completed by then.

I'm really looking forward to University now, I'm just trying to enjoy what I'm doing now before it's all over with as it will be soon and make sure I take the most from it that I can.

Los semanas finales del curso

Spanish
For Spanish I must
  • Prepare a talk in Spanish
  • Complete a reading test
  • Complete an essay exam on the film
  • Be able to answer questions on 3 different topics in Spanish.
  • To complete these tasks I must properly revise and look into the subjects we have covered.
  • Also I must revise my talk and the essay that I will write in Spanish in class.

Literature
I must complete
  • my personal evaluation essay on my chosen piece of work- "The Heart of Darkness."
I have completed all other work for this class without remediation needed. So far I have completed my introduction and my conclusion of the essay which will be 1200 words altogether and completed in class on 25 May. To pass the assessment I must know exactly what I am going to write for the day of the exam-this includes
  • Literary techniques used
  • Motifs,
  • Theme
  • My opinion of the work.

History
  • For history class I am halfway through completing the essay on Hitler and the start of World War 2. The essay is due on Friday.
  • On the 14th we will complete an essay in class as an assessment.
  • In addition to this I will be writing an essay on the partition of India and the political effects on the area of Kashmir. This essay will complete the history unit. I aim to finish the essay for the end of May and have time for potential remediation.

Communication
For communication class I have completed all assessments apart from my two talks-which I will deliver together. I will be completing my talk arrangements later this week.

So that is what has to be completed. It's up to me to balance preparation for Spanish exams, history essay exam and the literature essay exam while completing the rest at home in my own time.

Last blog before Hols

So this week I decided to concentrate lots on Spanish. This details only what I did towards Spanish, although I did do other things too.

Thursday

Although I was feeling ill today I tried to listen to Spanish and complete exercises on what I listened to. When I completed my speaking assessment I felt I understood most of what Alicia asked me apart from a few things. So I decided to continue to work on listening and improve as much as possible!
In addition to this I worked on verbs that are similar to gustar. For example: doler; molestar; parecer; sobrar; faltar; quedar and many others. I just practised forming sentences with the structure required. This was a good thing for me to practise and by coincidence, Alicia covered this subject in class on tuesday and we went over some other words using the same formation.

Friday

After class I decided to go over the subjects I covered for my talk. I also covered little things I hadn't practised for a while like the weather, time, numbers over 100 etc.
I found a section in one of my Spanish textbooks and completed exercises on these subjects. I found it really helped.

Saturday & Sunday

Over the weekend I again completed less than I would like to due to feeling ill.
Despite that, I made sure I wrote a story in Spanish on the subject of future plans. This was a subject I revised for the talk and was of the subjects I felt the most rusty on. So completing that essay for Alicia meant I could see where I was making little mistakes.

Monday

Monday I couldn't complete much at all without getting a headache. I managed to do a little listening but did not complete any exercises on it. Listening is a good thing to try to do often because I find it the hardest to do in Spanish.

Tuesday

I completed a reading comprehension sheet for homework for the class.
I also continued to look at Las Lenguas de las Mariposas to improve reading comprehension.

Wednesday

I completed some more exercises using verbs like gustar and listened to Spanish conversations. I worked on the use of preterite and imperfect and It's starting to become easier. It will begin to come to me faster once I've worked on it a little more.

Next week I will aim to continue to work on my Spanish just as much (good having holiday time to do it) and also I will begin to look into my history topics further to decide which I prefer to write about. I've narrowed it down to a few things which I want to keep secret until I decide.
For literature class I have the coursework available to do over the hols so I want to try and get that done. I have a comparison essay and a personal reflection essay which will be done on Out of Africa-quite a complicated novel, but it should be enjoyable.
Also I want to complete my Comms work. I'm nearly finished the assessments apart from the talks, which I will work on over the hols along with the other subjects mentioned and Spanish and hope to be ready to present them sometime after the holiday. Dieca's advice has made me realise I don't have anything to worry about, but worrying! So I'm ready to get stuck into all this work while I have time off. Being able to work only 2 days a week during the holiday gives me an advantage to get to where I want to be.

See you after Easter....

2nd last March blog

This week I have:
  • Worked on my Spanish presentation
  • Completing talking assessments for Comms
  • Researching possible history questions for my personal essay
  • Reading "The Heart of Darkness"
  • Trying to find a short story or poem I can write about for Lits
  • Revised Spanish conjugations
Good and bad things about these tasks were:

Spanish: I enjoyed coming up with a topic I wanted to talk about. It has been great practise with my speaking. I have also realised a few things that I forgot in Spanish and have revised them. It has been quite hard to spread myself evenly though. I enjoy writing stories in Spanish very much, so tend not to work on my listening as often as I write. This week I will try to concentrate on all of the relevant areas evenly.

Comms: I am three quarters of the way through the assessments using programmes. I have found this interesting because it shows clearly how different people choose to present themselves using varied tone of voice, body language, and speed of voice. It has shown me that this all makes a slight difference. I found the Al Gore documentary slightly more difficult to assess because I found him quite confusing. But eventually I learned to look at it objectively and not emotionally. I am used to watching a TV program without much thought to the reasoning behind every detail. It was really interesting to observe his methods closely. I find myself being able to assess speakers and TV programmes a little differently now!

History: Researching an essay question for history is actually quite hard. I have so many periods in history that I find so interesting but that would not quite be as suitable to assess as others are. So I've begun to be objective and compromise between finding a subject I feel real passion for and one that a good argument can be created around. I am narrowing down the search. So this Friday I want to be able to show Evan some examples of questions I'm interested in and see what he thinks. Until then, I want to take his advise and read as much as possible on the subjects to find suitable candidates.

Lits: Ok finishing "The Heart of Darkness" seemed like an impossible task at first. However I've now really gotten into the story and the literary techniques. So much so that I'm thinking of doing something quite challenging for my Lits personal reflection essay. I have been thinking of doing "To Kill a Mocking Bird" which is one of my favourite books. This week I will discuss that with Madeleine and find out her opinion on the book. Just out of interest I will research other good short stories as a back up. This unit has given me confidence in my writing. It's made me consider that perhaps writing a book one day would be quite enjoyable.

So this coming week I have some organisation to do and have to make sure I spread myself evenly and give myself enough time to do what I want to do. This is good practise for the final weeks of the course where we will be in the same situation. I've realised after getting quite stressed with balancing study, family things and a relationship that being disciplined is the only way to get through things efficiently. I have learned to cull time wasting parts of my life and just get into what I want to achieve.

Nuevo blog

This week I completed my target of sticking to my SMART target for Jordi.
I have chosen to concentrate on passing my NABs for Spanish.

So this week I intended to practise my listening skills and complete exercises on what I had listened to. In addition to this I have been revising my Spanish notes on cities, family and people and how to describe them. I have been making sure I test myself on each of these subjects to see how am I doing and continuing until I have memorised words better. I am finding this technique of testing myself and then repeating exercises on what I have revised has worked quite well.

For Literature I intended to read more of the book: "The Heart of Darkness" which in actual fact Madeleine asked us to read more of. I have made more of an effort to concentrate more while reading the book to ensure that I am understanding the more subtle meanings of the words. Each day after Spanish I make sure I find a quiet place to read without any distractions and read for at least half an hour. This is difficult at first, eventually though I find it hard to tear myself away.

Next week I am going to make sure that I have completed more talking exercises for Scott. The exercises/assessments are to watch an example of a speaker and analyse objectively how well they get their point across, their style and use of visual aids. I will aim to complete two of these by next week and to learn from the exercise how to better get my point across while talking.

Also I want to be ready for the Spanish speaking test by continuing to revise my old notes and listening to Spanish. I will do this by completing exercises on the subjects covered in the past and by working on what I will talk about to help improve my pronounciation. I will see the results of this by hopefully improving on my vocabulary and passing the NAB.
